Layering is important.

When it’s cold outside, you want to make sure you start with a nice warm outer layer, like a heavy winter coat.

Follow that up with a long sleeve thermal shirt. These are great for locking in your body heat and keeping you nice and toasty.

Underneath that you’ll want a base layer. The best shirts for this are the ones you’re embarrassed about owning, but that you feel to guilty to throw out.

Beneath that your skin! Be sure to use lotion to lock in moisture!

Then under your skin is your tough shell. This is what prevents you from crying in public on the bus when a really sad song comes on your Pandora station.

But then, under that tough shell, is a layer of total vulnerability and openness. This is the layer that lets you open up and connect to other people but it’s also the layer that might make you cry for an hour over your pet gerbil that died in middle school. Don’t get drunk, or this layer will wind up on top somehow.

And then under that layer is a layer guts and stuff. They’re pretty gross, so try not to think about them too hard.
